Motivation and engagement became a focus area for me because of the complexities of classrooms and learners. Additionally, it was an area I spent a lot of time thinking about when I was planning different ways to present the new curriculum to intermediate grade students. In this area I showed growth in when I applied new MEd learning directly into my teaching and reflected on the experiences and the benefits for my learners. Through this focus I was able to use my new knowledge to create learning experiences in my classroom that fostered voice, choice, options for learning, positive feedback, praise, and authentic learning opportunities, and these are evident in some of the following artifacts.

Artifact 1Imaginative Play Airport Experience to Teach Time, blogpost I took some time to reflect as a teacher about what made my grade 4/5 students sparkle, curious, creative, and joyful as learners. I noticed that my students really enjoyed learning, and took a lot of ownership when it was playful, imaginative, when they had a voice, choice, an active role in their learning, when they were engaged and motivated about a topic. I noticed that my students strengths were being imaginative, as well as they learnt to collaborate and build on others ideas. Therefore, I set out to create a Project Based Learning experience for my students to teach time in an exciting and playful way. The blog post is all about my experience and decisions to teach in this manner and what I noticed as a positive result. This artifact is an example of being adventurous, trying something new, and the rewarding of a rich learning opportunity resulting in student engagement and motivation in learning. In publishing this assignment on my blog it led to discussions and conversations with different educators and inspiring ideas exchanged.

Artifact 2: 565i Engaging Learning Experience- Part 2 Learning Synthesis

Description: One of the many questions I have been thinking about throughout part 2 of this course is how can you engage students? A broad question that touches on the idea of motivation, creating opportunities for all learners to enter the learning activity, Universal Design for Learning, choice, voice, and engagement. This learning synthesis discusses how I have thought about the topics and readings presented through this lens of student engagement, as well as how they could be applicable to math.

Artifact 3:  How Can Teachers use communication and feedback to foster and encourage motivation in aspiring Self-Regulated Learners? Inquiry Paper

Description: My spiral of inquiry journey has allowed me the opportunity to inquire, discover and grow in the area of formative assessment, feedback, motivation, and communication due to research and applying new knowledge to my classroom and teaching. Additionally, this paper incorporates my personal learning goal and area of interest about how I use Freshgrade in my classroom to communicate student learning, and document student growth and achievement. I think this paper is a great demonstration in my personal growth as a learner as I was able to apply knowledge gained in the program, directly into my classroom and communicating student learning, and the growth I was able to make with regards to motivating students to inspire them to reach goals, and move beyond their zone of proximal development with encouragement and support.
